Since we are visibly different and our faces reveal our soul, I paint portraits. I treasure honoring nature. Something magical happens as a subject's inner spirit emerges onto a canvas.

Viewing a portrait painting can be an opportunity to slow down, open our social and emotional walls, to know and feel a subject's essence and experience a genuine connection with them.

Creating has always been a part of who Susan is—ever since childhood, she’s had a pencil, pen, or brush in hand. A lifelong lover of books, art, libraries, and museums, she later discovered glass art, founded an art school, authored a bestselling how-to book now in its fourth edition and sold worldwide. Today, Susan is combining her love of writing and art into a coffee table book—a true reflection of her life’s passion.

Art

I am involved in using a mixed - media approach in my paintings. I usually work on Yupo, a plastic manmade paper and have currently returned to working on canvas. My paintings incorporate collage techniques, acrylics, dyes, oil pastels and stamping. Whimsical animals are my favorite subject to paint, although currently, I have been working with layering techniques that use geometric forms. An emphasis is on color and movement.

Art

“Mark Making is a term used to describe the different lines, patterns, and textures we create in a piece of art. Ellen Mason’s work deals with the landscape, organic forms, and the surrounding environment.“

Although not site specific, her paintings and drawings deal with the physical process of actually making the mark, resulting in tension and, layering that result in either bold or delicate statements.

Find the beauty.” I have always been a keen observer. If you know me now, it’s hard to believe I barely spoke as a child. But, I watched. I vividly remember taking in everything around me from a very young age, the sights, the sounds, the energy of life everywhere. As an artist today, I do the same, experiencing, exploring and imagining, until WHAM, I am stopped in my tracks by... something, an image, a moment in time. It might be the way the light just hit those rocks, or the glitter of colors dancing on the water, the intricate textures of someone’s hair or the intimate tilt of two heads engaged in conversation. It’s not really about the subject matter itself. I look for the beauty in the moment that makes me catch my breath. And, then, I paint it.
