In Memoriam
Dolores August Winterhalter
1928 – 2020
Dolores August Winterhalter succumbed to the Covid19 virus on April 19, 2020, in Michigan, where she had moved in 2010 to be near family.
Her legacy is hundreds of watercolor paintings that have made their way across the
U.S. and Canada. Dee was an art educator, a certified teacher in Japanese floral
arrangement and Kamakuri wood carving. She studied and painted in France, Japan,
Italy, England, and China. An active member in many fine arts organizations in the
community, she served as president of the Sarasota Branch of the National League of
American Pen Women, and was bestowed many art awards.
“The Franciscan nuns taught me how to paint on glass and they would sell my
work,” she once said, remembering how fortunate she felt to have had so many
wonderful mentors in her life. She continued with a message that we all can take to
heart: “So many generous people helped teach me that I would never hold anything
back from my own students. You have to share your gift.” Amen to that.
